Electric wheelchairs for veterans
Electric and manual wheelchairs for disabled UK veterans, their partners and their carers — supplied free of charge by Project Independence Veterans (PIV) across Wigan and the North West.
Ask about a wheelchairNo forms, no fees, no fuss
Many veterans and families come to us after long waits, confusing eligibility rules or disappointing experiences with suppliers. We keep it simple: tell us what you need, and we will tell you what we can do. Everything we provide is given free of charge.
We have supplied electric wheelchairs to veterans who wanted to reach their local cenotaph and pay their respects, to a gentleman collecting one for his wife, and to a lady who simply wanted to get out and about in her village again.
What comes with a wheelchair
- Electric or manual wheelchairs, checked over before handover
- Rear storage bag for shopping and personal belongings
- Rain cover, so British weather is not a reason to stay indoors
- A friendly handover and someone to come back to if there is a problem
Who we help
Disabled UK veterans come first, but we do not turn our backs on the people around them. Partners, carers and members of the local community have all received equipment from us. If you are unsure whether you qualify, ask us anyway.
Questions we are often asked
- Is there a cost or a grant application to fill in?
- There is no cost and no lengthy grant form. Contact Project Independence Veterans (PIV), tell us what you need, and we will tell you honestly what we can do.
- Can a veteran's partner or carer receive a wheelchair?
- Yes. We have supplied electric wheelchairs to spouses and family members of veterans, as well as to people in the wider community who needed one.
- Do you supply electric wheelchairs or manual ones?
- Both, depending on what we have available and what suits the person. Electric wheelchairs are usually supplied with a rear bag and a rain cover.
- How long does it take?
- It depends entirely on what we have in stock at the time. We never make promises we cannot keep — we will be straight with you about timescales.
