Why mobility matters

Losing the ability to get out of the house does not just limit where a veteran can go — it cuts them off from friends, family, appointments, remembrance events and the community around them. A scooter gives that back. It is the difference between watching life through a window and being part of it.

Some of the veterans we have helped had not left their homes in months. Others had waited a long time for a manufacturer or supplier to sort out a fault. We step in where we can, quickly and without red tape.

What we can provide

• Street and pavement mobility scooters, checked before handover
• Rear storage bags and rain covers so the scooter is usable all year round
• Practical guidance on using and looking after the scooter
• Ongoing help — some veterans we support have come back to us over several years

How to ask for help

1. Contact us through the form, by email or on our social channels and tell us about your situation.
2. We will talk it through with you and check what we currently have available.
3. If we can help, we arrange a handover — often at Wigan Armed Forces Community HQ. If we cannot, we try to point you to someone who can.

Questions we are often asked

Do veterans have to pay for a mobility scooter?

No. Where Project Independence Veterans (PIV) is able to supply a scooter, it is given to the veteran at no cost. We are funded by donations, partners and community fundraising.

Who can ask for a mobility scooter?

We support disabled UK veterans and, where we can, members of their household and people in the wider community who are struggling with mobility. Get in touch and tell us your situation.

What area do you cover?

We are based in Wigan, Greater Manchester, and work across the North West of England. Handovers often take place at Wigan Armed Forces Community HQ.

What happens after I get in touch?

We talk with you about what you need and what we currently have available. If we cannot help directly, we will try to point you towards an organisation that can.
